3. The Origin and Traditions of the Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is one of China’s traditional holidays, with a history of over 2,000 years. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Every household celebrates with various activities, including eating zongzi, dragon boat racing, and hanging mugwort and calamus. These traditions not only enrich the cultural fabric of the festival but also express people’s wishes for a better life.

a. Eating Zongzi: Zongzi is the traditional food of the Dragon Boat Festival. It is made by wrapping glutinous rice, red dates, bean paste, and other ingredients in bamboo leaves and then boiling them. There are many varieties of zongzi, with different flavors from the northern and southern regions, each unique in taste.

b. Dragon Boat Racing: Dragon boat racing is one of the most lively activities during the festival. Every year, on this day, various places hold dragon boat races, attracting thousands of spectators. c. Hanging Mugwort and Calamus: Around the Dragon Boat Festival, people hang mugwort and calamus on their doors, which are believed to ward off evil and bring peace to the household. These plants also have medicinal properties, such as preventing insect bites and purifying the air.
